Most people use Claude in a browser tab. They type a prompt, get a response, and move on. Claude Cowork is a different product entirely — and once you understand what it actually does, you'll see why the chat window is just the beginning.

What is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is a desktop application built on top of Claude — Anthropic’s AI model — that goes significantly further than answering questions in a chat window. Rather than responding to one prompt at a time, Cowork operates as an AI agent: it takes a task, breaks it into steps, and carries each one out on your machine.

That means it can:

  • Read documents, PDFs, and files stored on your computer

  • Write and save new files directly to your file system

  • Open and interact with applications you already use

  • Run multi-step workflows without you supervising each step

  • Follow custom instructions you set once — and remember them

It’s built on the same underlying AI model as Claude Chat, so the quality of reasoning is the same. The difference is what it can do with that reasoning. You can download Claude as a desktop app from Anthropic’s website to get started.

Claude Cowork vs Claude Chat: what’s the difference?

The simplest way to put it: Claude Chat answers your questions. Claude Cowork does the work.

When you use Claude Chat, you’re in a conversation loop. You type something, Claude responds, you type again — and there are plenty of ways to use it that most people never try. But you’re always the one driving.

With Cowork, you delegate entire workflows:

  • It reads your files to understand context

  • It plans the steps it needs to take

  • It works through them — opening apps, writing content, saving outputs

  • It comes back to you with the result

Think of Claude Chat as a very smart advisor. Claude Cowork is that advisor with their own desk, access to your filing cabinet, and the ability to actually sit down and get things done.

What about Claude Code?

Claude Code is a separate tool aimed at developers — it works in the terminal and is designed for writing and editing code. Claude Cowork is for general professional tasks: writing, research, file management, workflow automation. No coding required.

What we tested (and what happened)

We gave Claude Cowork five types of task from a real working week — not demos, not cherry-picked examples. Here’s what happened.

1. Summarising a large set of documents

We pointed it at a folder of 14 reports and asked for a structured summary of the key themes. It read them one by one and produced a clean, organised output in under five minutes. The same task done manually would have taken the better part of a morning.

2. Running a scheduled workflow

We set up a recurring task — a daily content draft based on a brief we wrote once. Cowork runs it automatically, checks what’s already been done, and produces a new version each time. We review; it does the legwork.

3. First-drafting a blog post

We gave it a topic, a tone of voice guide, and a list of internal links to weave in. It searched for relevant sources, structured the post, and wrote a draft. The voice needed editing — but the research and structure saved roughly two hours of first-draft time.

4. Organising a messy downloads folder

We asked it to sort through a cluttered folder: rename files consistently, move them into labelled subfolders. Ninety seconds. Done.

5. Drafting replies to recurring email types

With our email guide as context, it drafted responses to five common types of enquiry. Usable with light edits — significantly faster than starting from a blank page.

The pattern across all five: Cowork performs best when the task is clear, the process is repeatable, and the instructions are specific. The more precisely you brief it, the better the result.

Who is Claude Cowork for?

Claude Cowork earns its place if you regularly do any of the following:

  • Process high volumes of documents or data

  • Repeat the same types of task each week

  • Create similar content regularly — reports, summaries, first drafts

  • Spend time on admin that follows a predictable pattern

If your Claude use is mostly one-off questions or occasional prompts, Claude Chat is probably enough. Cowork is for people who want to hand off whole workflows — not just individual queries. And using AI agents like this is increasingly one of the most in-demand skills for 2026.

How does it compare to other tools?

Compared to Microsoft Copilot, the key difference is scope. Copilot lives inside Microsoft 365. Cowork operates across your whole machine and can chain tasks together in ways Copilot can’t match.

There’s also Claude Dispatch — a companion tool that lets you send tasks from your phone while Cowork executes them on your desktop. The two work well together for people who want Claude running tasks even when they’re away from their desk.

FAQs: Claude Cowork

Do I need to be technical to use Claude Cowork?

No. If you can write a clear instruction, you can use Cowork. It’s designed for everyday users, not developers. The setup takes a few minutes and no coding is required at any point.

Does Claude Cowork cost extra?

Claude Cowork requires the Claude desktop app, available from Anthropic’s website. You’ll need a Claude subscription — check Anthropic’s site for current pricing. No separate Cowork subscription is needed.

Can Claude Cowork access the internet?

Yes — Cowork can browse the web as part of completing tasks, for example to research a topic or find current information. You can guide what it accesses through the instructions you give it.

Is Claude Cowork safe to use with my files?

Cowork only accesses files and folders you direct it to. It doesn’t browse your computer independently. As with any AI tool, it’s good practice to review outputs before using them externally.

How do I get started with Claude Cowork?

Download the Claude desktop app from Anthropic’s website. Once installed, Cowork is available within the interface. If you’d like structured guidance on building it into your daily work, the ivee Claude Cowork Programme covers exactly that.

Ready to make Claude Cowork work for you?

Claude Cowork isn’t a novelty. It’s a practical tool for anyone who does repetitive, document-heavy, or multi-step work — and wants to spend less time on the execution and more on the things that actually need them.

The best way to get value from it quickly is to start with one workflow you do every week and hand it over. Once you see what’s possible, the rest follows naturally.

The ivee Claude Cowork Programme is designed exactly for that — practical, hands-on, and built for people who want to actually use this, not just understand it. Book onto one of our AI programmes at ivee and start learning today.
