Claude is already one of the most capable AI assistants around. But most people are only using a fraction of what it can do — and there's one feature that changes that completely. Claude Skills are plug-in tools that give Claude new abilities: connecting to your apps, automating repetitive tasks, and working the way you actually work. This post explains what Skills are, why they're worth installing, and how to get your first one set up in minutes.

What Are Claude Skills?

If you’ve used Claude before, you’ve probably noticed it’s good at answering questions, drafting content, and reasoning through problems. But out of the box, Claude doesn’t know what’s in your Google Drive, can’t check your emails, and can’t trigger actions in your other tools.

Claude Skills change that. A Claude Skill is a small, self-contained bundle that gives Claude new capabilities — like reading files from a specific folder, connecting to a messaging app, or running a custom workflow you’ve built. Think of them like apps you install on your phone, but for your AI assistant.

Each Skill typically contains:

  • A set of tools that Claude can use (e.g. read a spreadsheet, search Slack, create a document)

  • Instructions that tell Claude how to behave in a particular context

  • Optional configuration, like which folder to access or which account to connect

Skills are a core part of Claude Cowork — Anthropic’s desktop tool designed to help you use Claude as a genuine daily work assistant, not just a chat window. If you’re deciding which Claude plan to use, Cowork mode (and Skills) is one of the standout reasons to consider upgrading.

Why Claude Skills Are Worth Your Time

The gap between a helpful AI and a genuinely useful one comes down to context. A generic AI can answer general questions. A Skill-powered Claude can answer questions about your work — because it has access to the right information at the right moment.

Here are a few things Skills make possible that aren’t possible with basic Claude:

  • Work with your actual files — read documents from a connected folder, summarise a PDF you just saved, or check a spreadsheet for errors

  • Connect to your tools — browse Slack channels, check Google Drive, read emails, or interact with project management apps

  • Run repeatable tasks automatically — scheduled Skills can check for updates, send digests, or flag things that need your attention

  • Specialise for your role — a Skills set for a content marketer looks completely different from one for a finance analyst or operations manager

According to Anthropic, the goal behind features like Skills is to move Claude from a general assistant to a persistent work partner — one that understands your context without you having to re-explain it every session. That shift makes a real difference in how much time you save each week.

You can also combine Skills. Running a writing Skill alongside a research Skill, for instance, lets Claude pull in live information while it’s drafting content for you. Claude Projects work well alongside Skills for keeping everything organised.

How to Find and Install Claude Skills

Skills are installed through Claude’s Cowork desktop app, and the process is straightforward. Here’s how to get started:

Step 1: Open the Claude desktop app

Skills are available in the Claude desktop app (not the browser version). If you haven’t installed it yet, download it from Anthropic’s website.

Step 2: Browse the Skills library

Inside the app, you’ll find a Skills section where you can browse available Skills. These are grouped by category — productivity, communication, research, file management, and more. You can also search by name or by the app you want to connect.

Step 3: Install and configure

Click on any Skill to see what it does and what permissions it needs. Most Skills require you to:

  • Connect an account (e.g. sign in to Google or Slack)

  • Choose a specific folder or workspace to give Claude access to

  • Set any preferences for how the Skill should behave

Step 4: Start using it

Once installed, Claude will automatically use the Skill when it’s relevant. You don’t have to type any special commands — Claude detects when a Skill applies and uses it in the conversation. You can also call on it directly by describing what you need.

Skills are designed to be low-friction by design. Most take under five minutes to set up, and you can remove them at any time from the same settings panel.

Tips for Getting the Most from Your Skills

Installing a Skill is just the first step. Here’s how to actually get value from them:

  • Start with one, not ten. It’s tempting to install everything at once. Resist that urge. Pick the Skill most relevant to your biggest daily friction point and get comfortable with it first.

  • Be specific in your requests. Claude uses Skills best when you give it clear, direct instructions. Instead of “check my files”, try “summarise the last three documents in my Work folder and flag anything that needs a response.”

  • Combine Skills intentionally. Once you’re comfortable, try pairing a research Skill with a writing Skill, or a scheduling Skill with a communication Skill. That’s where the real time savings show up.

  • Check what’s available regularly. The Skills library is updated frequently. New Skills get added as more app integrations are built — what wasn’t there last month might be there now.

  • Use the ivee guide. ivee has put together a practical walkthrough of the most useful Skills and how to configure them — it’s a good shortcut if you want to skip the trial and error.

The bigger picture here: Skills are how Claude stops being a general-purpose chatbot and starts being your specific work assistant. A few hours of setup can save several hours a week in the long run. If you want more structured guidance on using AI tools like this, ivee’s AI Masterclass series is worth exploring.

FAQs: Claude Skills

Do I need to know how to code to use Claude Skills?

Not at all. Claude Skills are designed for everyday users — no coding required. You browse, install, and configure them through a simple interface, and Claude handles the rest. If you can install an app on your phone, you can install a Skill.

Are Claude Skills free to use?

Skills are available as part of the Claude Cowork desktop app. Some Skills are free to install; others may connect to third-party tools that have their own subscriptions (like Slack or Google Workspace). The Skills themselves don’t usually add an extra cost on top of your Claude plan.

Is it safe to give Claude access to my files and apps?

Claude only accesses what you explicitly grant it permission to. Each Skill asks for specific permissions during setup — you stay in control of what Claude can and can’t see. Anthropic’s security model is built around transparency and user consent.

Can I build my own Claude Skill?

Yes — and this is one of the more exciting aspects of the Skills system. If you have a specific workflow in mind, you can create a custom Skill using Claude’s Skill creator. ivee covers this in more depth in its training programmes.

What’s the difference between a Claude Skill and a Claude Project?

Claude Projects let you save context and preferences for a particular type of task. Skills go further — they give Claude active tools it can use, like reading a file or sending a message. The two work well together.

Ready to Put Claude to Work?

Claude Skills are one of those features that sounds like a nice extra until you actually use one — and then you wonder why you were doing things the slow way for so long. Whether you want Claude to read your documents, connect to your favourite apps, or automate the tasks you do every day, Skills are how you get there.

The ivee Claude Cowork Programme is built around exactly this: helping you turn Claude into a practical, daily work tool that fits your actual workflow. You’ll learn which Skills matter for your role, how to configure them properly, and how to build simple automations that save real time.
