Two AI tools keep coming up in conversations with our clients right now: Claude and Perplexity. Both are genuinely impressive. Both are worth knowing about. But they’re built for fundamentally different things — and picking the wrong one for a task will leave you frustrated.

We tested them head-to-head across real business use cases. Here’s what we found.

First, What Are They?

Claude

Claude is Anthropic’s AI model — a direct competitor to ChatGPT. It’s available as a web chat interface at claude.ai, and more recently as Claude Cowork, a desktop application designed for non-developers that can work with your files, run automated tasks, and integrate with tools like Slack and Google Sheets.

Claude is a general-purpose AI: it can write, analyse, reason, code, summarise, and hold complex multi-turn conversations. Its strength is depth — careful, nuanced outputs that hold up under scrutiny.

Perplexity

Perplexity is an AI-powered search engine. Its core job is to answer questions by searching the web in real time and synthesising what it finds into a clear, cited response. Think of it as Google, but instead of returning ten blue links, it gives you a direct answer with sources attached.

Perplexity is a research tool first. It’s not trying to write your marketing copy or build you a spreadsheet.

How We Tested Them

We ran both tools through five categories of real business tasks:

  • Research — finding current information on a topic and summarising it

  • Writing — drafting a professional email, a report section, and a LinkedIn post

  • Analysis — reviewing a document and pulling out key insights

  • Q&A — answering specific factual questions, including recent events

  • Task complexity — handling a multi-step brief with several requirements at once

Research: Perplexity Wins

This is Perplexity’s home turf, and it shows. Ask it about a recent industry report, a competitor’s latest funding round, or what’s been happening in a market this week — it will find it, summarise it clearly, and show you exactly where the information came from.

Claude, by contrast, has a knowledge cutoff. It can’t browse the web in its standard form (though Claude Cowork has web fetch capabilities), so for anything time-sensitive, you’re relying on training data that may be months out of date.

Winner: Perplexity — for anything where recency and sourcing matter.

Writing: Claude Wins — Easily

This wasn’t close. Claude’s writing is noticeably more natural, more flexible, and more responsive to tone and style instructions than Perplexity’s. Whether we were drafting a professional update, a persuasive email, or a longer-form piece, Claude produced output we could actually use with minimal editing.

Perplexity will write for you if you ask, but it’s not what it’s built for. The results are functional but flat — they read like a summary, not a piece of communication.

Winner: Claude — it’s not a comparison worth making after the first attempt.

Analysis: Claude Wins

We pasted in a supplier contract, a set of meeting notes, and a financial summary, and asked both tools to pull out the key points, flag risks, and identify action items.

Claude handled all three well. It read carefully, structured its output clearly, and — importantly — flagged things we hadn’t explicitly asked about. Perplexity’s analysis was surface-level in comparison; it’s not designed to sit with a document and reason through it.

Winner: Claude

Q&A: It Depends on the Question

For factual questions about things that happened recently — news, market data, events — Perplexity is more reliable because it pulls live information. Claude will sometimes answer confidently based on outdated training data, which is a real risk if you’re not aware of it.

For questions that require reasoning — “what’s the most likely explanation for X?” or “what should I consider when doing Y?” — Claude is stronger. It thinks through problems rather than just retrieving answers.

Winner: Split — Perplexity for current facts, Claude for reasoning.

Task Complexity: Claude Wins

We gave both tools a multi-part brief: summarise a topic, draft a short document based on it, suggest three follow-up questions, and flag any gaps in the information provided.

Claude handled all four parts coherently, keeping context across the whole task. Perplexity completed parts of it but lost the thread — its outputs were disjointed, as if each request had been processed independently.

This matters a lot in practice. Real work tasks are rarely single-step. Claude’s ability to hold a complex brief and work through it systematically is one of its biggest practical advantages.

Winner: Claude

The Bottom Line

Use Perplexity when you need up-to-date information fast, with sources. It’s excellent for research, market scans, and quick factual lookups. Think of it as a significantly smarter search engine.

Use Claude when you need to write, analyse, reason, or work through a complex task. It’s the better general-purpose AI — and with Claude Cowork, it can go further still, working with your actual files and automating workflows on your behalf.

For most business users, these tools aren’t competitors — they’re complementary. The teams getting the most out of AI right now tend to use a search-first tool like Perplexity for research, then Claude for everything that comes after.
