Design always felt like someone else's job. You needed the right software, the right training, and ideally a few years of practice before anyone would trust your output. Then Anthropic launched Claude Design in April 2026 and changed the maths entirely. Now you describe what you need in plain English and Claude builds it on a live canvas — prototypes, decks, mockups, landing pages. This guide walks you through exactly how it works and how to get your first project done.

What is Claude Design?

Claude Design launched on 17 April 2026 as an Anthropic Labs product built on Claude Opus 4.7 — Anthropic’s most capable vision model. It lives at claude.ai/design and works through a simple chat-and-canvas interface: you write on the left, your design appears on the right.

The output is live HTML, not a static image. That means it is clickable, testable, and exportable without any extra steps.

What you can build

  • Interactive prototypes and wireframes

  • Pitch decks and presentations

  • Landing pages and marketing one-pagers

  • Product mockups and feature flow sketches

  • Social media assets and campaign visuals

Once you are done, you can export to PDF, PPTX, Canva, or standalone HTML, or hand the design directly to Claude Code for building. If you are weighing up which AI tools are worth paying for, our breakdown of free AI tools across Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT is a useful starting point.

Who is Claude Design for?

Claude Design is built for everyone who has ever had a visual idea but no straightforward way to get it out of their head. That is a much wider group than professional designers.

  • Founders: go from a rough idea to a shareable pitch deck in one session

  • Product managers: sketch feature flows and hand them to designers or Claude Code

  • Marketers: create landing pages, social assets, and campaign materials without raising a design ticket

  • Salespeople: produce on-brand one-pagers for specific pitches or proposals

  • Designers: explore a wide range of directions quickly without spending hours in Figma

The one requirement: a paid Claude subscription. Claude Design is available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. It is not included in the free tier. Access is bundled with your plan at no extra cost. You can read about getting started with Claude Design in the official support docs.

How to get started with Claude Design

Getting into Claude Design takes about two minutes. Here is the full onboarding flow.

Step 1: Access claude.ai/design

Sign in with your existing Claude account. If you are on a paid plan, Claude Design will be available in the sidebar. Navigate directly to claude.ai/design.

Step 2: Tell Claude what you do

First time in, Claude asks a single onboarding question: what is your role? Options include Design, Engineering, Product, Sales, Data, Marketing, or Other. This shapes the defaults for your workspace.

Step 3: Set up your design system (optional but recommended)

A design system in Claude Design is a set of reusable brand rules — your colours, typography, components, and layout patterns. Claude builds it by reading your codebase or uploading design files. Every project you create after that automatically applies your brand. If you skip this step, Claude uses generic defaults. You can always add it later.

Step 4: Start your first project

Click New Project and you are in the canvas. Type your first prompt in the chat on the left and watch Claude build on the right.

Step by step: your first project

A good Claude Design prompt has four elements: the goal (what you are building), the layout (how things should be arranged), the content (what information to include), and the audience (who will use or see it).

Prompt examples that work well

  • “Design a mobile app onboarding flow with 4 screens that walks users through our core features — clean, minimal, aimed at non-technical users”

  • “Build a landing page for a new AI productivity tool — hero section, three key benefits, social proof, and a single CTA button”

  • “Create a pitch deck for a Series A fundraise — 10 slides, covering problem, solution, market, traction, and ask”

  • “Design an internal one-pager for our sales team to use with enterprise clients — formal but approachable”

The refinement loop

You do not need to get the prompt perfect first time. Claude Design is built for iteration. After the first generation, you can:

  • Click on specific elements and leave inline comments

  • Edit text directly on the canvas

  • Use adjustment sliders for spacing, colour, and layout

  • Ask Claude in the chat to apply changes across the whole design

The most common mistake people make is trying to write one enormous prompt. Write a focused first prompt, look at what Claude generates, then ask it to refine specific sections.

Writing prompts that actually work

The quality of your output is directly tied to the quality of your prompts. These are the things that make the biggest difference.

  • Name the format first. Say “landing page,” “pitch deck,” “wireframe,” or “one-pager” early in the prompt. Claude uses this to set layout and structure.

  • Include your audience. “aimed at non-technical founders” or “for enterprise procurement teams” shapes tone, vocabulary, and visual weight.

  • Specify your content. The more specific the content you provide, the better the output. Do not leave it to Claude to invent your value proposition.

  • Use your design system. If you have set one up, Claude applies it automatically. If you have not, mention your brand colours or reference a style (e.g. “clean and minimal, similar to Linear or Notion”).

  • Iterate in layers. Get the structure right first, then the content, then the visual polish. Trying to fix everything in one prompt rarely works.

FAQs: Claude Design

Is Claude Design free to use?

Claude Design is available on paid Claude plans — Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. It is not available on the free tier. Claude Pro costs around £16 per month, and access to Claude Design is included with no separate subscription required.

Do I need design experience to use Claude Design?

No. Claude Design was built for people without a design background — founders, marketers, product managers, and anyone with an idea but no Figma training. You describe what you want in plain English and Claude builds it.

Can I export my designs from Claude Design?

Yes. You can export designs as PDF, PPTX, standalone HTML, or send them directly to Canva for further editing. You can also share a live link with your team, or hand the design off to Claude Code to be built into a real product.

How is Claude Design different from Canva or Figma?

Canva and Figma are template and drag-and-drop tools — you start with a template and manually arrange elements. Claude Design generates entirely from a text prompt, refines through conversation, and can apply your brand design system automatically. It is better for rapid prototyping; Canva and Figma are better for polished production work.

Can I use my company’s brand colours and fonts in Claude Design?

Yes. During onboarding, Claude Design builds a design system for your team by reading your codebase or design files, capturing your colours, typography, and components. Every project created after that automatically uses your brand. You can have more than one design system if needed.

Ready to go further with AI?

Claude Design is one of the most accessible AI tools to pick up — you can go from zero to a working prototype in under 10 minutes. The best way to get value out of it quickly is to start with something real: a deck you actually need, a landing page for a project you are working on, a wireframe for an idea you have been sitting on.

If you want to make Claude a proper part of your daily work — not just for design but for writing, research, and everything in between — the ivee Claude Cowork Programme is built for exactly that. It shows you how to use Claude as a genuine work partner, step by step.
