ChatGPT has a free plan, a £16/month plan, and a £160/month plan. Most people aren't sure which one they're actually on — or whether they're missing out. Here's the honest breakdown of what each tier gets you, and who should (and shouldn't) pay for an upgrade.

ChatGPT Free: what you actually get

The free version of ChatGPT is genuinely impressive — and for a lot of people, it’s all they’ll ever need. OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) gives you access to their flagship model, GPT-4o, at no cost. That means you can hold conversations, write content, summarise documents, brainstorm ideas, and get answers to complex questions — for free.

But there are limits. The free plan throttles your usage, especially during peak times, and some of the more powerful features are locked behind a paywall. Here’s what’s included:

  • Access to GPT-4o (with daily usage limits)

  • Basic image analysis — upload a photo and ask questions about it

  • Limited image generation (a small number of images per day)

  • Web browsing, so ChatGPT can look things up in real time

  • Memory — ChatGPT can remember things about you across conversations

  • Access to the GPT Store (pre-built tools made by other users)

What you don’t get on the free plan: Advanced Voice Mode (the conversational, real-time audio feature), higher usage limits, access to newer or more powerful models like o1 or o3, and priority access when the servers are busy.

If you’re just getting started with AI, free is a perfectly good place to start. You can always upgrade later once you know what you actually want from it. ChatGPT Plus (£16/month): is it worth it?

ChatGPT Plus is the most popular paid tier — and for good reason. At £16/month (or $20/month in the US), it removes most of the frustrations you’ll hit on the free plan and opens up a meaningful set of extra features.

What Plus adds on top of free

  • Higher usage limits — far fewer “you’ve hit your limit” interruptions throughout the day

  • Advanced Voice Mode — a real-time, conversational audio interface that feels like talking to a person

  • DALL-E image generation — create images from text descriptions directly inside ChatGPT

  • File uploads and analysis — upload PDFs, spreadsheets, Word docs and ask ChatGPT to analyse them

  • Access to o1 and o3 models — OpenAI’s reasoning models, which think more carefully before answering (great for complex problems)

  • Priority access — faster responses and fewer slowdowns at busy times

  • Early access to new features before they roll out to free users

The file upload feature alone is worth it for a lot of professionals. Being able to drop in a report and ask ChatGPT to summarise it, pull out key figures, or draft a response — that’s a genuine time-saver.

The honest verdict? If you use ChatGPT more than a couple of times a week for work tasks, Plus usually pays for itself. If you’re mainly using it for the occasional question or a bit of curiosity, free is fine.

ChatGPT Pro (£160/month): who is this for?

ChatGPT Pro is ten times the price of Plus — £160/month. That’s not a typo. So what on earth do you get for that?

Pro is designed for people who are pushing the absolute limits of what AI can do: researchers, developers, data scientists, and professionals running intensive, complex tasks every single day. It’s not for casual users.

What Pro adds on top of Plus

  • o1 Pro mode — OpenAI’s most powerful reasoning model, which spends more time “thinking” through problems before answering. Better at complex maths, coding, and research than the standard o1 model.

  • Unlimited usage across all models — no caps, no slowdowns, no hitting a daily ceiling

  • Unlimited Advanced Voice Mode — no usage limits on the conversational audio feature

  • Early access to the most cutting-edge research previews — you get new OpenAI features first

  • Extended context and more compute — better performance on long, complex tasks

For most people reading this — even regular professionals who use AI daily — ChatGPT Pro is overkill. Plus handles the vast majority of real-world use cases without issue. Pro is worth considering if you’ve been on Plus for a while and genuinely keep running into limits, or if your work involves heavy AI use at a level that makes the cost easy to justify.

Free vs Plus vs Pro: a quick comparison

Here’s the side-by-side view so you can see what you’re comparing at a glance:

  • Price: Free / £16/month / £160/month

  • GPT-4o access: Yes (limited) / Yes (higher limits) / Yes (unlimited)

  • Advanced reasoning models (o1, o3): No / Yes (limited) / Yes (unlimited, including o1 Pro)

  • Advanced Voice Mode: No / Yes (limited) / Yes (unlimited)

  • Image generation: Limited / Yes / Yes

  • File uploads and analysis: No / Yes / Yes

  • Priority access: No / Yes / Yes

  • Early feature access: No / Some / All

The jump from Free to Plus is significant. The jump from Plus to Pro is mostly about removing limits and getting the most powerful model — i1 Pro — rather than unlocking entirely new features.

Worth noting: OpenAI updates these plans fairly regularly, so it’s always worth checking the official ChatGPT pricing page for the most current breakdown. Prices can also vary slightly between countries.

So, should you upgrade?

The answer depends on how you actually use ChatGPT. Here’s a simple way to think about it:

Stick with Free if…

  • You’re still exploring AI and not using it heavily yet

  • Your use is mainly casual — quick questions, occasional writing help

  • You don’t need to upload files or use advanced voice features

  • You’re not hitting the daily usage limit regularly

Upgrade to Plus if…

  • You use ChatGPT for work and keep running into usage limits

  • You want to upload files (PDFs, spreadsheets, docs) for analysis

  • You want access to stronger reasoning models for trickier tasks

  • You want Advanced Voice Mode for hands-free, conversational AI use

  • You’re using AI regularly enough that £16/month feels reasonable

Consider Pro only if…

  • You’re doing very intensive, high-stakes work that needs the best possible model

  • You’re a researcher, developer, or data professional pushing AI to its limits daily

  • You’ve been on Plus for months and still find yourself constrained

One thing worth saying: knowing which plan to be on is only useful if you know how to actually get value from ChatGPT in the first place. If you’re not sure how to prompt it well, how to use it for work tasks, or what it’s genuinely capable of, upgrading won’t help much. That’s what proper AI training is for — and it’s something the ivee Core AI Programme covers in detail, no technical background required.

FAQs: ChatGPT plans

What is the difference between ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Pro?

ChatGPT Free gives you access to GPT-4o with usage limits and no advanced features. ChatGPT Plus (£16/month) adds higher usage limits, Advanced Voice Mode, image generation, and access to newer models. ChatGPT Pro (£160/month) is the top tier, giving you the most powerful reasoning models with no limits and early access to new features.

Is ChatGPT Plus worth £16 a month?

For regular users who hit the free tier’s limits, yes. Plus significantly increases how much you can do each day, adds image generation via DALL-E, Advanced Voice Mode, and lets you upload files for analysis. If you use ChatGPT a few times a week for work, it usually pays for itself quickly.

Who needs ChatGPT Pro?

ChatGPT Pro is built for power users who need OpenAI’s most capable reasoning models (like o1 Pro) without hitting limits. Think researchers, developers, or professionals running complex analysis tasks daily. For most people, Plus is more than enough.

Can I use ChatGPT for free without signing up?

Yes – you can use ChatGPT without an account for basic text conversations. However, you get more features and higher limits by creating a free account, and significantly more again with a paid plan.

What AI model does ChatGPT Pro use?

ChatGPT Pro gives access to o1 Pro mode, which is OpenAI’s most advanced reasoning model. It thinks longer and harder before responding, making it better at complex maths, coding, and research tasks. You also get unlimited access to GPT-4o and other models.
